Family Resource Facilitators:

Utah Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Facilitators help primary caregivers of children experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse challenges.  Facilitators act a family peer support for families, including information to access community resources and local support groups.  Provided at no cost to the family.

NAMI Utah (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

  • NAMI Basics – Signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses.
  • NAMI Family-to-Family – A free, 12-week course for family members of individuals with severe mental illnesses.
  • NAMI Homefront – A free-class for family members of Veterans or service members who are struggling with mental health conditions.
  • NAMI Family & Friends – A 90-minutes seminar that informs people who have loved ones with a mental health condition how to best support them.
  • NAMI Family Support Groups –  A free, peer-led support group for family members and loved ones of individuals with a mental health condition. 
  • NAMI Utah also provides mentoring services, support groups, family resource facilitators, and more.

Offers education and therapeutic support to empower and give parents hope in supporting their child’s mental health.  Provides parenting courses, connections with therapists, and parent coaching.

Utah Parent Center:  Parent Training and Information Project
For parents of students with disabilities. Consultants can work with your child’s school to advocate for appropriate services, understand your rights and responsibilities, find resources, make connections with others in your community, and receive support. Workshops and Presentations including: 

  • “Parents as Partners in the IEP Process”
  • “Transition from School to Adult Life”
  • “Tools for Constructive Communication: Learning to communicate as an Effective Team Member”
  • “Section 504:  What Parents Need to Know”

Utah Parent Center:  Family to Family Network
The Family to Family Network is a statewide parent-support network run by volunteers. It is designed to educate, strengthen, and support families of persons with disabilities, especially those who are on the waiting list or are in services with the Division of Services for People with Disabilities. Network leaders are parents of individuals with special needs and link families to local resources, services, and disability-friendly events. The Family to Family Network is a project of the Utah Parent Center. The organization can help you by providing support through local meetings, either in-person or online; information and referrals; family to family support; tips on how to advocate for your family; help to families who qualify or may be eligible for services from DSPD; and help to understand programs and services and how to work with service providers and support coordinators.

Utah Family Voices was started as a way of helping to advocate for and assist families in navigating and accessing health care and family support services that are family-centered and culturally appropriate for all children and youth with special needs.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
