The Power of Possibility: National School Psychology Week, Nov. 9-13

On some days, it can be difficult to believe in the power of possibility, but students have powerful allies in their corner to help.

For National School Psychology Week, Nov. 9-13, we’re highlighting the work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive, hold on to hope, set goals, and cultivate the resilience and growth-mindset needed to achieve them.

School psychologists support students in growing, not only academically but as people. They support educators in teaching social-emotional skills, and are there with a listening ear when solutions to problems seem far from hand.

The pandemic has left many of us feeling isolated and vulnerable. But students and parents can take comfort knowing they’re not alone. Throughout the health crisis, CSD psychologists, social workers, and counselors have been proactively checking-in with students by email or phone. CSD’s Department of Responsive Services also has launched an online behavioral supports request form that parents can easily access from home.

“Within 24 hours, we can connect parents and students with one of our counseling professionals, or refer them to one of our mental health partners. We also have funds available to help families pay for behavioral care,” says Responsive Services Director BJ Weller. “There is no shortage of resources available. More often, the challenge is recognizing the signs of trauma and giving yourself permission to seek help.”

Join us in saluting our mental wellness warriors by taking time this week to contemplate and share what brings you hope and reminds you of the power of possibility.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
