Canyons District Schools Will Be Closed Feb. 20 for Presidents Day

Canyons School District schools and office buildings will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 to commemorate Presidents Day, a national holiday held each year on the third Monday in February. Classes will resume per their regular bell schedules on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Due to parent-teacher conferences being held this week, most schools also will be closed on Friday, Feb. 17 to provide teachers compensatory time for working late into the evenings. For elementary schools, the preceding Thursday, Feb. 16, is an early-out-day, which means the afternoon bell rings at 1:40 p.m. Parents and guardians with questions are encouraged to contact their school’s Main Office.

The long weekend also presents Canyons District’s Information Technology Department an opportunity to install new network equipment with minimal disruption. On Saturday, Feb. 18, IT will start to use new core network equipment, and during the cutover, there will be a disruption to services, including District e-mail, Skyward, Canyons Virtual High School and connectivity to the Internet from all schools and District Offices. The outage is expected to last just a few hours – however, there’s a possibility it may last until about 5 p.m.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
