Inspiring Talks — By Kids! CSD’s TEDxYouth Event Nov. 14

Sometimes the most powerful “ideas worth spreading” come from kids.

Canyons School District is pleased to host a TEDxYouth event, which will feature perspectives of 16 student speakers from CSD middle and high schools. The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mount Jordan Middle School. The event will be held at the same time as, and in conjunction with, the national TEDxYouth 2015: Made in the Future event held in New York City.

The TEDx website, created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading,” supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their communities. TEDxYouth 2015 includes more than 100 local events tuning in live around the globe to explore the theme, “Made in the Future,” and consider what the world will be like in 2035.

CSD’s student speakers will be joined by a number of local performers, including 2013 Canyons Idol and internet sensation Lexi Walker, who recently signed a music contract with Sony’s Portrait Records, and will release her holiday-themed debut album, Merry Christmas, Nov. 20.

Video of all CSD TEDxYouth talks and performances will be recorded and distributed through the TEDx website.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
