Park Lane Teacher Surprised by Google with Cash for Students

Park Lane Elementary teacher Diane Nahalewski has found a way to help her special education students get the wiggles out while they learn. Now, thanks to a surprise donation from Google and Donors Choose, Nahalewski has found the money to make her project a reality.

Google and DonorsChoose surprised the special education teacher Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 with money to buy materials to create standing desks and foot swings to assist students in their learning. Nahlewski plans to use the almost $800 donation to assemble a little bit of duct tape, some bungee cords, zip ties, pool noodles, pvc pipe – and a lot of ingenuity – into a workstation that will allow each of her students room to move while they study.

The gift came as part of an announcement that Google will fund about $60,000 in special education projects posted via DonorsChoose.org throughout Salt Lake and Utah Counties. Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities seeks to celebrate innovative teachers working with students who have special needs.

Also at the school assembly, five Park Lane teachers learned they would receive $500 for each of their requests posted at DonorsChoose.org. Check out photos of the celebration on the Canyons District Facebook Page.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
