CSD’s Karen Sterling is as good as gold in the eyes of the Utah Afterschool Network. The Director of Student Advocacy and Access received the organization’s “Champion in Afterschool Award” at its conference Friday, Oct. 7, 2015. The award honors Sterling’s efforts to ensure all students receive the support and opportunities they need to achieve academic success, regardless of their circumstances.
“Her drive to serve students leads her to work extra-long days, often (into) the middle of the night,” the organization stated in its awards program. “Karen works tirelessly with her talented team to analyze the data and find innovative ways of improving programs to make them even more meaningful, engaging, and empowering for the youth.”
Sterling, who received the Board of Education’s Apex Award for the 2012 District Administrator of the Year, was recognized by the Afterschool Network for her exceptional efforts in a number of areas. She was lauded for operating successful community school programs in CSD Title I schools. She also was recognized for her work to develop strong relationships with Valley Mental Health, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake and other ognatinzetions to bring resoruces and services to students and their families, including children staying at The Road Home overflow shelter in Midvale.
The Utah Afterschool Network is a non-profit organization that works to connect decision-makers and resources to foster polices committed to funding and sustaining quality programming for children outside of school hours.
