All In! CSD’s College Application Week Set for Nov. 16-20, 2015

High school seniors: Time to apply for college! Canyons School District is hosting College Application Week Nov. 16-20. At that time, all high school seniors will be encouraged to fill out a college application during the regular school day. Counselors, teachers and volunteers will be on hand to help students, every step of the way.

“A lot of people don’t have the support at home to go out and visit colleges or even know how to apply,” Hillcrest High student Yolizma Lara, President of Latinos in Action, said of College Application Week. “It’s a helpful experience to have that available at school. I really thank you for that.”

Lara’s comments came at the Canyons Board of Education Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015 meeting, in which the Board signed a proclamation to establish CSD’s 2015 College Application Week. This marks CSD’s second annual College Application Week, which is intended to demonstrate that college is not only within students’ reach, but an important part of their futures.

“I plan on … applying for BYU, the University of Utah, and Utah State,” Luke Brockbank, Jordan High Student Body President, told the Board of Education. “I’m looking forward to College Application Week. It really helps a lot of kids get going on their college applications. It’s really important. A lot of kids don’t have the resources to get started, or they don’t have the knowledge. I think this is an awesome opportunity to get these kids stated and to get it done quickly,  to help them out to be able to do what they’re not able to do at home.”

Brockbank was joined at the Board Meeting by Lara, Alta student Zac Bunkall, Brighton student Chris Newman and Corner Canyon student Jacob Boyle. The students shared with the Board their observations and appreciation for College Application Week, which they said serves as an important resource and reminder for high school seniors to start planning today for post-secondary education.

Utah College Application Week, sponsored by the Utah System of Higher Education’s StepUp to Higher Education campaign,  complements the Canyons Board of Education’s mission to ensure all students are ready for college and careers when they graduate from high school.

CSD is pleased to report that 91 percent of CSD’s Class of 2015 applied to attend at least one college, with some high schools posting as high as 97 percent college application rates, thanks to the diligent efforts of high school counselors during College Application Week and thereafter. This year’s goal is to have all seniors fill out a viable college application.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
