CSD Plans Orientations For Freshmen, Sophomores

To ease the transition from middle school to high school, Canyons District high schools will hold orientations this week  for freshmen and sophomores students, who will be new to high schools this year as a result of grade reconfiguration. 

The orientations will be Thursay, Aug. 15 and Friday, Aug. 16. 

Starting this fall, high schools will house ninth- through 12th-grades, middle schools will house sixth-through eighth-grades and elementary schools will welcome kindergarten through fifth grades. The first day of school in Canyons is Monday, Aug. 19, 2013.  

The dates and times of the high school orientations are:

  • Alta High – Friday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m-2 p.m., for both ninth- and 10th-grade classes.  Bus services will be provided.
  • Brighton High – Thursday, Aug. 15, 10 -11 a.m., for sophomores; Friday, Aug. 16, 10-11 a.m. for freshmen. No bus services will be provided.
  • Corner Canyon High – Thursday, Aug. 15, 8:30-11 a.m., for ninth-grade students; 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for 10th-grade students. Bus service will be provided.
  • Hillcrest High – Thursday, Aug. 15, 8:15-11 a.m., for ninth-grade students; 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. for 10th-grade students.  Bus service will be provided.
  • Jordan High – Friday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m.-2:25 p.m., for both ninth- and 10th-grade students. Bus service will be provided.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
