Escape the Winter Blues with CSD’s Spring Plays

From satires and fantasies to romantic comedies and epic dramas, there’s a little something for everyone in this year’s spring play lineup. You don’t have to travel all the way to New York City to experience the magic of the theater, just head down the street to your closest Canyons District high school to see one of these timeless productions:

“The Curious Savage”
This timeless comedy, which first premiered in 1950, asks an important question: “Is it insane to value kindness and affection when the world seems to reward greed and dishonesty?” Opening night was on Feb. 20, but there’s still time to catch this sweet satire. Tickets are $9 when purchased in advance, or $10 at the door.
When: Feb. 20-23, 7 p.m.
Where: Alta High

“Parfumerie”
The romantic story that inspired such heartwarming shows as, “She Loves Me,” and “You Got Mail,” Parfumerie will take you on an emotional journey with two lovers who don’t know they’re in love. This is the first time this play, set in a small perfume shop in Budapest, has been staged in Utah. Tickets are $5 and available at the door or in the school’s Main Office.
When: Feb. 21-23, and 25 at 7 p.m.
Where: Jordan High Auditorium

“Akhnaton”
Pharaoh Akhaton, his wife Nefertiti, and a myriad of other fascinating characters, struggle to lead Egypt through a time of turbulent change and confusion. Written in 1936 by the beloved Agatha Christie, the play was never performed during the author’s lifetime. Hillcrest’s performance will be the play’s Utah premiere. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online starting March 1 at http://www.hillcresttheatre.com/.
When: March 14-16, 7 p.m.
Where: Hillcrest High Auditorium

“Peter and the Starcatcher”
Let your imagination take flight with this swashbuckling prequel to Peter Pan. The Tony-award winning musical will transport you to the Neverland you never knew, and with every humor-filled moment, will have you hooked. Tickets can be purchased prior to each show at the school’s box office.
When: March 15, 16 and 18 at 7 p.m.
Where: Brighton High Auditorium

“Peter and Wendy” and “Once On This Island”
The drama students at Corner Canyon have decided one spring play isn’t enough, so they’re staging two. The fantasy, “Peter and Wendy” will be staged first, followed by performances of “Once On This Island,” a provocative story about social inequities.
When: “Peter and Wendy,” March 15-16, 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.
When: “Once On This Island,” May 15-18, 7 p.m. and again on May 18 at 1 p.m.
Where: Corner Canyon Auditorium

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
