Early Childhood Home Learning

Your child’s learning can be strengthened and hastened when you supplement their classroom experiences are supplemented with at-home learning and growth opportunities.  Canyons Early Childhood Department is committed in supporting you as parents in the education of your young children!  We have created a collection of resources to help you in this endeavor.

Part of the daily routine in our preschool classrooms is called Plan-Do-Review. We do Planning Time, Work Time, and Review Time. The goal is to improve the intentionality of activities and provide ongoing engagement with adults and peers.

This has the following benefits:

  • Brings more purpose to what they are doing
  • Increases independence
  • Expands language as they communicate their plans and then review them with you
  • Develops a sense of time and accountability

Here are some practical ways to implement this process:

  • Planning for a meal/snack – then helping with the creation and consumption – then review what you accomplished
  • Help your children take pictures or videos and share them with their teacher to show what they have accomplished as part of their “review time”
  • Meal times and bedtime are good times to review the day. Ask questions about feelings, predicting next steps, new plans for tomorrow.

More resources to come:

Goodbye Questions!  Hello Conversation!

You have probably noticed that when adults are talking with children, adults tend to rely heavily on questions.  “What’s that?”  “Do you like playing with cars?”

When children are asked a question, they are required to only provide a limited response.  If we shift our conversational pattern away from questions and towards comments, we have the potential to shift daily moments into opportunities for learning.

Instead Of This … Say That

  • “What did you draw?” … “I see a big green line!”
  • “What’s that?” … “I see a big crane!”
  • “What do you have?” … “You are holding two cars!”
  • “Do you like it?” … “Mmm, this pizza is delicious!”

Additional Resources:

NoTimeForFlashCards.com is a great resource for fun, engaging, creative activities.

In addition to resources available at your local library, the following online resources provide access to free books and literacy activities:

These videos support families who have young children who struggle with language development, engagement with appropriate play, and participating in social exchanges (turn taking).

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
