Halloween Safety: Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween may be the spookiest night of the year, but not for the reasons many parents think. While families fret about stranger danger and America’s sugar-fueled obesity epidemic, the most pressing danger is auto-pedestrian accidents. Pedestrian fatalities nearly double on Halloween, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation: 30 percent of all crash fatalities on […]

Are New Schools More Efficient than Older Schools?

With better insulating materials and sustainable building products, today’s schools are more energy efficient than those built 50, or even 20, years ago, which translates to lower energy bills and an immediate cost savings for taxpayers. As schools and school districts grow larger, however, to meet demands of growing student populations, those energy gains can […]

FAFSA: Get Help Paying for College

Utahns are notorious for missing out on free federal college aid because they don’t apply, or complete the FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. â€¨At the start of 2016, Utah was ranked 50 for its FAFSA-completion rate. Due, however, to a statewide effort to walk high school seniors through the application process, […]

Community Builders: The Traits of a Great Principal

There’s a well-known trick to remembering the difference between the words “principle” and “principal.” A principle is an idea you stand by, but a principal is a person who stands by you. To remember the difference, keep this in mind: the principal is your pal. In honor of Utah School Principals this week from Oct. […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
