Grade Reconfiguration - Employee Information

We're here to answer questions

To facilitate the transition to the new configuration of grades in Canyons schools, the Administration, in partnership with the Canyons Education Association, created a Grade Reconfiguration Task Force. This 25-member advisory group has been meeting since February 2011 to identify and ultimately recommend solutions to the employment, endorsement and licensure issues related to the new grade configuration.

While the committee will continue to work on issues as they arise, many concerns about the new structure have been addressed. For example, be reassured of the following:

  • We anticipate most jobs will be secure
  • Current Canyons District teachers will have the first opportunity to apply and interview for open positions

We understand that many of you will have questions as we move toward the fall 2013 implementation. If you have a question or simply wish to voice a concern, please send an e-mail message to communications.  We will make sure those questions are answered in a timely manner.

It's been said that change endures, is inevitable, and is the only constant. A historic change on the horizon in Canyons is the across-the-district grade reconfiguration — a move that has required much thought and planning to ease potential impacts to CSD employees.

For nearly a year, the CSD Administration, along with the Canyons Education Association, has examined the questions and concerns surrounding the logistics of the plan to move ninth-graders into the high schools, create middle schools of sixth- through eighth-grades and elementary schools that house kindergarten through fifth grades.

The conversations have led to the formation of a comprehensive course of action that addresses the myriad human resource issues that rise as a result of the restructure. To be sure, the aim of the Administration is to ensure a smooth transition to the new configuration while also striving to safeguard employment for our classroom educators.

We also want to communicate early and often about the process to put the new grade configuration into place. While we're on target to meet our fall 2013 timeline for implementation, which will coincide with the opening of the new Corner Canyon High School in Draper, we seek your continual feedback. By working together on this important scholastic endeavor, we can make a change in the lives of our students for good.
