The Canyons Board of Education approved Tuesday the appointment of Teri Mattson as the new principal of Ridgecrest Elementary School. Mattson, a 25-year educator who currently serves as the Jordan School District Curriculum Consultant for gifted and talented student instruction and staff development, replaces Catherine Stoneman, who retired this summer.

A letter was sent this week to parents of children who attend schools in Canyons District, informing them of the recent decision by the Board of Education to reduce the number of instructional days for the 2010-2011 year from 180 to 175. Voters in the Canyons School District approved a $250 million, tax-rate-neutral bond on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, according to unofficial results posted by the Salt Lake County Clerk. With 100 percent of precincts reporting just before midnight Tuesday, the unofficial results showed 12,519 votes, or 50.68 percent, for the issuance of bonds, and 12,184 votes, or 49.32 percent, against the issuance of bonds. The Canyons District Board of Education has placed Willow Springs Elementary and Crescent View Middle on moratorium status for 2010-2011. This means students who don’t live within the schools’ boundaries, if they aren’t already enrolled, won’t be allowed to enroll for the coming school year.  Principals requested the moratorium status based on enrollment projections that place them above the open enrollment threshold defined by state statute as greater of 90 percent maximum school capacity or maximum capacity minus 40 students. Work On Road In Front Of CAB Delayed

The road in front of the Canyons Administration Building will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Sunday, June 26.  The District was notified Monday that a section of 500 West near CAB, 9150 S. 500 West, will be closed for resurfacing. The closure will extend from 9120 South to 9400 South. The road is expected to be open to normal traffic Monday morning.
