Canyons District “rolled out the red carpet” for students as they returned to classes on Monday, the first day of the 2010-2011 school year. At four CSD elementary schools — Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale and Sandy — students walked to the front doors on red carpets. They were greeted by cheering teachers and administrators. Many parents, amid bunches of balloons and posters, also stood at the edge of the carpets, snapping photographs of their children. As the first day of school approaches, officials at Canyons District want to make sure parents and students are aware of various construction zones that may delay traffic on the first few days of school. The District urges the use of alternative routes and asks for patience with District Transportation as buses may experience slight delays. Motorists need to be aware of construction along 700 East. While the project has progressed since spring, and the construction company plans to push traffic through the corridor during school-commuting hours, some delays are expected. The Canyons Board of Education approved Tuesday the appointment of Christine Waddell as the new principal of Butler Elementary School. Waddell, a National Board Certified Teacher who currently serves as the assistant principal at Midvale Middle School, replaces Laura Finlinson, who resigned to accept the curriculum director position in Jordan School District.
A Brighton High School graduate has been announced as one of the 1,900 recent winners of a National Merit Scholarship financed by a college or university. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 2,800 other college-sponsored award recipients announced in late May.  Mackenzie Woolf, a resident of Sandy whose probable career field is International Relations, is the recipient of a National Merit scholarship from Macalester College, a highly selective liberal arts college in St. Paul, Minn.
