It’s Official: CSD Bond Approved By Voters

It’s official: Voters in Canyons School District on June 22, 2010 approved the District’s $250 million bond proposal.

In all, 13,517 votes were cast in favor of the bond, and 13,163 votes against the bond, according to results made official Tuesday evening by Salt Lake County and subsequently, the Canyons Board of Education in its legal role as the Board of Canvassers. The bond passed with 50.66 percent of the vote. Voter turnout was 24.9 percent.

“We are grateful that Canyons voters have given us their permission to get started on $650 million in renovation needs in Canyons School District with this bond,” Canyons Board President Tracy Scott Cowdell said. “We look forward to getting started turning dirt in all corners of the school district as quickly as possible.”

The $250 million bond is tax-rate neutral. It will be used to rebuild Midvale Elementary, Butler Elementary and an elementary (to be determined) in the White City area; provide seismic upgrades to Sandy Elementary; rebuild Butler, Midvale, and Mount Jordan middle schools; and enclose classrooms and install air-conditioning at Albion, Crescent View and Indian Hills middle schools. It also would be used to upgrade Brighton and Hillcrest high schools and build a new high school in Draper to accommodate ninth-graders as part of the District’s academic plan to ensure all students are career- and college-ready by the time they graduate from high school. Moving ninth-graders into high school would give them the lab and academic supports they need as high school students, and allow middle schools to focus on high-school preparation. The Board approved grade reconfiguration earlier this year.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
