Summer Learning: Sign up now for Camps, Tutoring and High School Credit

Canyons School District offers a rich variety of summer learning opportunties for students of all ages. Whether you’re a parent looking for a fun, intellectually challenging way for your kids to spend their summer, or you’re a high school student desiring to get a jump on studies or play catch-up, there’s bound to be something that interests you.

Reading Tutoring

For entering K-3 students who need a little extra help with reading, Canyons offers a summer tutoring program at Edgemont Elementary School (1085 E 9800 S., Sandy, UT). The program – 30 minutes of tailored one-on-one tutoring – runs for eight days (June 20-23 and June 27-30). The entire eight-day session costs $50. Scholarships are available to students who qualify for free-and-reduced lunch. Parents must provide transportation. Registration is open now through May 20. Space is limited and sesssion fill up on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information visit https://tutor.canyonsdistrict.org or contact Judy Vreeke at 801-826-5013.

Summer Camps

Sing and dance like Elsa in the Disney blockbuster “Frozen.” Build a rocket and journey into outer space. Become a mad scientist, write a fairytale, design a videogame, or become a secret agent. Canyons District “Community Education” summer camps are much more than fun and games. They offer students a chance to tinker and dream, build friendships and social skills, and cultivate a love for lifelong learning. Weekly camps exist for all grades, from elementary through high school, and run from June through early August. Registration is open now and camps are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Weekly camp information and registration can be found at entrada.revtrak.net under “Community Education.”

Virtual High School

On the go this summer? No matter. High school students can get a jump on their studies or play catch-up from practically anywhere by enrolling in online courses through Canyons Virtual High School. Registration is open year-round and CSD students can enroll free-of-charge for up to five of the credits they’re required to obtain to graduate. Click here for more information or to register.

School-Based Programs

Some schools offer their own summer programs – an example being Alta High School’s robotics camp, which is open to all Middle School-age students and runs for one week only in late June, early July. For more information about such opportunities, check with your neighborhood school.

Summer Semester

This summer, while most kids will be enjoying a break in the sun, many high school students (grades 9-12) will be heading back to class. Registration for CSD’s Summer Semester opens Monday, April 4 and will run until Friday, June 10. But act fast, as classes are filling up fast. Three classes are offered in the June 20-July 11 Summer Semester: Computer Technology, Financial Literacy, and Participation Skills and Techniques. Classes won’t be held on Fridays or July Fourth. About 40 percent of the coursework can be done online. As a result, students could do homework on laptops while lounging in the sun at the pool. It would be helpful if students live close to Mount Jordan Middle, 9351 S. Mountaineer Lane, where the face-to-face classes will be taught. However, the school is only one block away from a TRAX station so students from across the Salt Lake Valley can take public transit to the class if they need to do so. Registration and payment for all courses will be submitted online. Cost ranges from $35 to $55, and waivers are available for qualifying students.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
