Deadline Nears to Apply for Grants from CSD Foundation

Libby McShinsky is seeing double in her classroom at Alta View Elementary.

McShinsky used iPads that were purchased with a 2014 Teacher Innovation Grant from the Canyons Education Foundation to help students learn about exponents – and the results were effective in multiple ways.

“I was teaching them about exponents, and I had this idea that cloning is like that,” said McShinsky, who received $4325.62 for her grant application titled “Illustrating Math Story Problems Using iPads.” 

“They knew that they had to master the math concept in order to make themselves into exponents,” she said. 

Teachers and Education Support Professionals in Canyons District are invited to apply for 2015 Canyons Education Foundation Innovation Grants, which can range in size from $1,000 to $10,000. Grants are awarded to teachers needing extra resources to promote excellence in the classroom and raise the bar on exemplary instruction.

Last year, the CSD Foundation gave away some $90,000 to Canyons teachers who submitted high-quality applications for funding.

Grant applications are due Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015.

 Applications can be accessed on the District’s website.

Winners of the grants will be notified in November with a surprise visit by a Foundation “prize patrol” carrying balloons and giants checks.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
