Applications Deadline For Dual-Immersion Programs Is Feb. 4

The application window for Canyons District’s dual-immersion language programs is Jan. 3 to Feb. 4, 2011.

The dual immersion programs, offered in partnership with the State Office of Education, offers students as young as 5 years old instruction in a targeted language, including in the subjects of math, science and social studies, for at least 50 percent of the school day.

Dual-Immersion programs help student develop the ability to read, write, speak and listen in another language from fully proficient teachers. They also will develop a world cultural understanding and be prepared academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our increasingly global society.

The application process is for first-grade students at seven of the eight CSD schools that have dual-immersion classes. Only Midvale Elementary is accepting applications for kindergarten and first-grade students. Dual-immersion programs are offered at the following elementary schools.

  • Spanish-English: Silver Mesa, Alta View, Midvale
  • Mandarin Chinese-English: Ridgecrest, Draper, Lone Peak
  • French-English: Butler, Oak Hollow

Applications are available on the Canyons District Web site, www.canyonsdistrict.org.

Parents with questions about the dual-immersion program or the application process are invited to a “Dual Immersion Information Night” on Jan. 6 from 7 to 8 p.m., in the auditorium of the Canyons Administration Building, 9150 S. 500 West.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
