Crescent View Middle School guidance counselor Bruce Shuck is perhaps best known for his work to help hundreds of students learn more about their Native American identity as part of the Standing Tall program. But he also is a noted champion of civil rights for all students, particularly those who have been disadvantaged and, in the words of Crescent View Assistant Principal Dave Barrett, “could use a measure of compassion and support, as well as a caring mentor.” For his commitment to students, Shuck was honored with the prestigious Human Rights Award from the Utah School Counselor Association. In addition to meeting weekly with Standing Tall students at Crescent View, Shuck is also a member of the Indian Education Parent Committee and coordinates a districtwide monthly Native American meeting.
