Canyons District Honored For Budget Excellence

Canyons School District has won the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International, an honor reserved for school systems that meet or exceed established criteria for preparing an annual budget.

The Meritorious Budget Awards Program was designed by ASBO International and school business management professionals to enable school business administrators to achieve excellence in budget presentation. The program helps school systems hone skills related to the development, analysis and presentation of a budget. The program is sponsored by ING, the global financial services company.  No other organization or award program is specifically designed to enhance school budgeting and honor a school system for a job well done. CSD was given the award for the manner in which it prepared and issued the 2010-2011 annual budget.

The presentation of the budget by the CSD Accounting and Budget Services Department received high marks from reviewers. “The budget is a fine document, which includes a wealth of information in graphic and narrative form. The document is user-friendly for the average taxpayer with lots of data presented in different forms to meet the needs of varied users,” according to the review’s summary. “The District is to be congratulated for their budget submission to the Meritorious Budget Award.”

“This is the first year that Canyons District, now in its second year of operations, has submitted a budget presentation for consideration of an award from ASBO International,” said Tracy Scott Cowdell, President of the Canyons Board of Education. “We are pleased that the efforts of our Accounting and Budget Services Department has been rewarded for such a prestigious award. We have no doubt that this will be the first of many accolades for their professionalism and expertise.”

The Association of School Business Officials International, founded in 1910, is a professional association of some 5,500 members that provides programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business management practices, professional growth and the effective use of educational resources.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
