Union Middle to Start School Year in Online Classes

Union Middle students will start the school year in online classes.

Despite maintaining an around-the-clock work schedule throughout the summer, construction crews need an additional two weeks to complete the new building at 615 E. 8000 South.

On Monday, Aug. 21 — the first day of the 2023-2024 school year — sixth- through eighth-grade students at Union Middle will go online to meet their teachers, start their classes, and access homework assignments. It’s expected the online-learning schedule will last two weeks.

Pivoting to remote learning for a short period of time will provide crews enough time to substantially finish the 219,000-square-foot project and allow Union Middle teachers and staff the time needed to ensure the campus is a clean, fully prepared, and welcoming environment for students.

Over the first two weeks of the school year, the project, which was paid for with proceeds from the $283 million bond measure approved by CSD voters in 2017, will be readied for required safety inspections, cleaned thoroughly, and opened to teachers so Union is primed for a Friday, Sept. 1 orientation for sixth-grade students and the first day of classes inside the building on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The Canyons community, including former students and their parents and educators who served at Union Middle, are invited to the official ribbon-cutting and grand opening on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The event doubles as Union Middle’s Back-to-School Night.

In the coming days, Union Middle parents will receive regular updates about where students will be able to get breakfasts and lunches during the online-learning schedule. Families also will receive information about how to check out Chromebooks and access free Wi-Fi.

A temporary learning site also is being identified for Union Middle’s Accommodated Core Classroom and Extended Core Classrooms. Information about the temporary sites will be communicated directly to the parents in those classes.

As they did throughout the COVID-19 pandemic when pivots to online learning were common, Union Middle will endeavor make sure students have what they need to be successful while learning via Canvas for 10 school days. Counselors will be available to help students navigate the process, as well.

Previously scheduled before- and after-school activities will be postponed until further notice.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
